Autumn League – Round 2 – Friday 2 October

Reporter: Paul Foster

It was a typical autumn day on the golf course this week, with frequent showers, plugged balls and more changes of waterproofs than anyone really cares to admit. Dark, menacing clouds hovered over us for much of the round, but thankfully they mostly kept their worst intentions to themselves and the rain never got too heavy. Even our friendly crows decided that discretion was the better part of valour and, for once, chose not to venture up to the 10th hole. Clearly even they had checked the weather forecast! Funny ‘Moment of the Day’…award went to Andy Timm’s trolley, which apparently decided that golf was far too slow and took matters into its own hands. With a mind of its own, the trolley suddenly took off, leaving Andy and Ian Smith with the unenviable task of chasing after it down the 6th fairway, looking very similar to the ending of a Benny Hill show! Whether Andy was trying to catch his trolley or the trolley was trying to escape Andy remains unclear!

Congratulations to all the card markers, every one correct…Well done…

Once again, Grahame Brickell came out on top in Division One. His run of form is becoming something of a problem, and there are growing calls for hatchet man Foster to step in and do something about it! At this rate, Grahame’s handicap might soon put him in the elite class of players…

This week’s Division Two winner was Les Williams, who navigated the showers, plugged balls and general autumnal chaos to come out victorious. Congratulations to both winners — and to everyone else who managed to keep their balls, waterproofs and trolleys under control!

2s today were Mark Pickles…AGAIN…. and Martin Franks
Until next week… keep swinging, keep smiling, and watch those runaway trolleys!

Rules Quiz answer

Correct answer B
Explanation: See Rule 6.2b. A ball is in the teeing area when any part of the ball touches or is above any part of the teeing area

Find the Fact answer

Answer 2 is correct. While working at American Golf Alister received an invitation to play with Alice Cooper at the Worsley Marriott course. He turned the invitation down because he didn’t think his golf was good enough. He did however meet the famous dead chicken flinger backstage after his Manchester gig. Answer 1 refers to Sir Alistair Cook. Answer 2 is partly correct: Alister was a regional bridge master, but he didn’t play against Omar Sharif despite being in the same bridge tournament in Manchester.
