Where did I put the charger for my handwarmers? Mats, leaves and other stuff…

I am sure like me you were overjoyed to receive an email from the Greens Committee recently advising that winter rules were being introduced with effect from Sunday 25 October. This prompted a couple of hours of enjoyable swearing and searching through piles of items left in ‘my’ garage by my children, who have long since moved to houses of their own with much less cluttered garages. I eventually managed to locate my golf mat. Result!
Our ever-diligent Handicap Secretary has put some notes together to clarify how the email we all received impacts on the competitions and leagues that we run in the Seniors’ Section. So, over to Paul…
Seniors’ Winter Rules
Author: Paul Foster
The introduction of winter rules and course protection measures by the club is now in force
For Seniors Friday League games and Seniors competitions which are handicap counting (to include Winter KO matches)
When a player’s ball lies in a general play area which is cut to fairway height or below the player must take relief by marking the position of the ball, lifting the ball, cleaning the ball if required, placing a multi-mat where the original ball position was, placing the ball on the mat and playing from there. A putter may be used on the approaches to greens.
If a golf ball when placed rolls off the mat, the player must try to replace it a second time. If the ball does not stay on the mat, the mat may be moved slightly to the nearest point, not nearer the hole, where the ball will remain on the mat when placed
If a golf ball comes to rest in general play areas of rough or any penalty area, no relief is available other than normal rules of golf (e.g. embedded ball or casual water).
The Winter league session is to be played over 12 holes. The course will be played each week as presented, so if there are temporary greens it does not matter, the round will count. The same applies if only limited holes are open or any number of temporary greens, the course will be played as presented that day. NOTE: If any winter greens are in play, the round will not be acceptable for handicapping.
If the Greens committee deem the course to be played with mats everywhere, then the competition will be not acceptable for handicapping.
For Happy Mondays
For Mondays the guidance for general play and social games applies i.e. you can use mats in the rough and the seniors only leaf rule can be used as appropriate, given that those games are not handicap qualifying. The ‘leaves on the fairway’ rule is included in our Strategy, Rules and Guidelines document. This document can be accessed from the link below. A copy of the document is also pinned to the Seniors noticeboard. The document has now been updated to include the guidance above

Autumn League – Round 5 – Friday 23 Ocotober
Reporter: Paul Foster
Storms Austen and Boelo mercifully held off unleashing their full fury until the last group was halfway down the 12th fairway. Clearly, they had decided we’d not suffered at all and it was time to turn up the entertainment! Then the wind and rain arrived with a vengeance, sending golf trollies complete with attached brollies racing down the 12th fairway like runaway shopping carts. The last group briefly considered abandoning golf in favour of a career in kite surfing. Thankfully, the club’s decision to end the round on the 13th hole proved inspired. Another two holes and we’d probably have needed a search party, a rescue helicopter and definitely a change of clothes!
RAF Intelligence Report: Operation Goosebumps
At 1130 hours above fairway 10, a sizeable formation of Canadian geese was observed flying in tight convoy formation towards warmer climes, displaying all the discipline and precision of the Fleet Air Arm on a routine deployment. However, the mission appeared to encounter a navigational difficulty when Wing Commander Charlie Goose, apparently convinced he knew a shortcut, directed his squadron due north. A splinter group followed obediently, presumably under the impression that Charlie had received fresh intelligence from Goose Command. Ground observers remain uncertain whether the squadron was embarking on a migration or a sightseeing tour of the Arctic Circle. At the time of writing, Charlie remains in command, morale is high, and the destination is anyone’s guess. Final assessment: Flight discipline excellent. Navigation questionable. Leadership under review. The main squadron, meanwhile, has been advised to remain calm and await further instructions. Over and out.
And yet, amid the biblical weather, runaway trollies, migrating wildlife and questionable headwear, six members still managed to equal or beat par! Either they displayed remarkable golfing skill, had made a secret pact with the golfing gods, or had simply decided that the weather was no excuse for a poor score. All in all, a memorable day’s golf. The course survived, most of the players survived, and the geese had the good sense to make an early escape. Roll on the next round – preferably with less wind, fewer airborne brollies and the golfing gods firmly on our side!
Division One
It’s those two again, Steve Gosling and Grahame Brickell came out top, Steve a clear four points ahead of Grahame on the day. Their run of form is becoming something of a problem, racing away at the top of the division. These two are a mammoth 15 points clear of 3rd placed Martin Franks.
DIVISION TWO
This week’s Division Two winner was Alister Cook, who navigated the showers, plugged balls and general autumnal chaos to come out victorious. Cook, Copeland & Thomas are vying for top spot, with Laird, Ormesher, Lennie and Craggsy ready to join them after they have completed 5 rounds.
Congratulations to both winners — and to everyone else who managed to keep their balls, waterproofs and trolleys under control!
2s today were made by Martin Franks, Grahame Brickell & John White.
Until next week… keep swinging, keep smiling, and watch those runaway trolleys!

Happy Mondays Report – 26 October
Reporter: Peter Willson
On approaching the car park just before 8.00 a.m. there was a bare smattering of cars and golfers. Four intrepid, hardy golfers were trying to decide should they venture out onto an increasingly wet and muddy course or return home for a warming drink. Your stand-in reporter, in Steve Bird’s absence, decided to return to a warm hearth and give a game of golf a miss today – good choice I feel as the rain intensified and dark grey clouds continued to glower. Until next week then…..
