Silloth Golf Club Open Day Prostate Cancer Support – Monday 5 July 2027

Author: Phil Ormesher

In July this year a very successful golf open day and PSA testing event was held at Silloth Golf Club. All the entry fees (£6,000) were given to Prostate Cancer Support to support underpinning the cost of private PSA testing in the less affluent areas of the country, particularly the North-West!

For those who aren’t aware, Silloth Golf Club iss a superb, if challenging, links course on the Cumbrian coast and in the top 50 of all UK golf courses.
The event, with 25 fourball teams entering and 140 PSA tests carried out, was so successful that Silloth’s Golf Council voted unanimously to repeat the event in 2027.

The date set is Monday 5th July 2027 starting at 11.00 am. The event actually goes ‘live’ for entries on the 4th of January 2027 at 9.30 and we expect it to fill up quickly, as it did this year. In talking about the event at Lymm the interest was high, so I have blocked off a number of entries.

If you wish to enter a fourball (£60 each player, not payable yet) can you let me know on phil@prostatecancersupport.org. Please include each players’ CDH number.

Autumn League – Round 3 – Friday 9 October

Reporter: Steve Bird

I had the dubious pleasure of collecting the soggy cards for today’s competition and the big subject of conversation in the clubhouse afterwards was the anomaly as to what was par on the 15th.

To clarify, as per Keith Melias email of 7 October, ‘stroke indexes and pars for all holes remain the same as the equivalent summer courses’

So the 15th remains a par 5. The problem was that, for whatever reason, it was allocated as a par 4 on ig. I spoke to Steve and Fizz about this and was informed that only Keith could correct the issue and he would do so when he returned after a day off. So, hopefully, by next week ig will be correct.

So, for the sake of clarity, I have shown both the ig score (in brackets) and the correct ‘card’ score.

A total of 36 players registered for today’s event which was marred by intermittent torrential rain. 24 completed the full 15, 6 started but didnt finish and 5 departed before starting.

No twos were recorded today.

Happy Mondays Report – 12 October

Reporter: Steve Bird

Fifteen players today in three teams of 3 and three of 2.

The number of holes played, and indeed, which holes we played was very ‘fluid’ as initially Hole 1 was closed for work but by the time we reached the 11th this was also closed.

So not only did we have different numbers in teams but we had a variety of holes played in permutations of between 13 and 16, and the big challenge in the clubhouse was how to decide the Winners.

However, without resorting to Pi, integral calculus, Pythagoras, sines, cosines and tangents and the rules of thermodynamics, our Club Treasurer came up with a formula based on number of players in a team and number of holes played which was acceptable to all – some of us understood it and the remainder were probably too embarrassed to admit they didn’t.

So the winning team was that of Peter Willson and Andrew Barker (again) with a score of 5.34 (don’t ask!!)

Runners up were Steve Barlow, Kevin Bocquet and Tony Dixon with 5.23.

And the leading individual scorer for the day was…. who knows? My brain was, by now, frazzled after spending most of the weekend trying to understand last Fridays cards and whether the 15th is a par 4 or a par 5. (It IS still a par 5 by the way)

But most importantly….. a good morning was had by all.!!!
