Mitre Cup – 11 August

The annual Mitre Cup competition between the Ladies and the Gents Seniors took place in glorious sunshine in what many would consider to be ideal golfing conditions.
This always makes it rather tricky when you are looking for excuses in the event that you lose.
Unfortunately, despite a full team of 24 having been compiled and suitably communicated with prior to the match, we were still a couple players light on the day.
Many thanks go to Mike Kendal for stepping in late and particularly Ted Broady, who abandoned the game he was already playing and made his way back to the 1st tee to fill a hole.
This still meant that Colin Hughes had to play a solo game so well done to him for sticking to the task.
It was noted that there was a serious gap in the 95% Course Handicaps being applied (the total for the Ladies being 691 and 478 for the Gents. But this didn’t stop the Ladies from suggesting that they should be receiving even more shots in their favour. A request that was flatly refused before tee-off had commenced!
The final result – a win for the Ladies 416 points to 393. Our hearty congratulations and well played to them.
A big thank you also to all the players that turned up and took part. Despite the disappointment of losing, this was another great event, played in the right spirit and where much conviviality carried over onto the patio for a quite a while after the golf was over. There’s always next year guys!

Championship Game Qualifiers 2026

Please find below the current list of qualifiers for the Championship Game which is due to take place on Friday 11 September. Qualifiers earn their place from the Friday League round winners, trophy winners, overall league winners and knockout competition winners. Some of our more talented golfers have qualified on more than one of the above criteria. The winner of the Peter Herrity Trophy will be added to the list (unless they are already on it).
If you are not on the list and you believe you should be, then please let a member of the committee know.

Fun Game – Bottle of Wine Competition – Friday 7 August

A turnout of 22 for today’s competition which is a decent number when you consider that 16 of our members were playing in the home match against Ringway. Our tee times were split either side of those in the match which meant that some didn’t start until after 11 am and finished after 2:30.
Another glorious day weather wise with the course, and in particular the greens, looking magnificent.
The scoring reflected the conditions with 9 players playing better or equal to their handicaps.

Enjoy your bottle of ‘Chateau Goodman’ Andrew. Pleased to say that card completion and IG records were markedly better this week. Happy Mondays Report – 10August

A perfect golfing day greeted 15 players comprising three teams of 3 and three of two.
The winning team Steve Gosling, Les Williams and Steve Bird with an average of 30.66 points.
Runners up were Mike Bennett, Colin Crail and Richard Yates with 29.66 – only one shot per player difference between the teams.
Individual best score was Les with 33 with Richard scoring 32.
Please note that Monday 31 August is a Bank Holiday where traditionally we do not play Happy Mondays. Therefore, there is no roster in this newsletter and no bookings to do this coming Sunday.
Tee booking for Friday 28 August 2026
As a large proportion of the Seniors Section will be heading off to our Exchange Day at Hazel Grove on the above date there will be no booking schedule issued for this Thursday evening. If you are not going to Hazel Grove and you want to play a social round at Lymm on the above date, please make your own arrangements and book your tee-times on the club website as normal.
Weird Golf Fact
In 1938, a Californian golfer named Ralph Kennedy played 1,000 rounds of golf in a single year — that’s nearly three rounds every day! He even kept scorecards for all of them. I feel sure that his wife gave her full and unqualified support as he set out for the course every morning. Ralph, were he alive today and a member of the Seniors, would not be able to repeat this great achievement, as the IG system currently only allows you to book one tee time per day. That’s progress!
